The map shows the approximate route with the main stops. It was the first stage of planning and was created by simply asking the question, “Which places would I like to see?”
The leg across France was necessary because it was a chunk of land that had to be crossed to unlock the rest of Europe. Living in Jersey has the advantage of enabling me to fly all over France relatively easily. But, I’ve done so much of it that for this trip I just wanted to get through it. If I could fly across it without stopping I would but alas the need for fuel overrides my desire for haste.
However, the South of France is great in August! From the research I had done Cannes Airport is a particularly GA friendly airport and with Nice and St. Tropez on the doorstep stopping over in that area wasn’t going to reduce me to tears.
The route was also determined by the length of time I could legitimately ‘hog’ the plane. The plane I’m going to fly is a Piper PA-28 180 – G-AXZD.
The plane is shared between a group and while I would have liked to have also included Greece and Turkey, the length of time required would take the plane out of circulation for too long and would be unfair on the others in the group.
So, the rough planning was (ignoring any inconsequential fuel stops and scenic flying) Jersey – France (Cannes) – Corsica (Bastia) – Elba – Italy (Naples/Salerno) – Croatia (Dubrovnik) – Hungary (Budapest) – Austria (Vienna) – Czech Republic (Prague) – Germany (Stuttgart) – Home, Jersey.
