Delirious in Dubrovnik

POSTCARD - DUBROVNIK - CROPPED

This city is a beautiful place and one to which I will return without a doubt.  So what can I tell you about what we’ve been up to?

Yesterday for the first part of the day we lay out on the beach area of the hotel.  Definitely one of the best hotels in the area.  The pool area is built upon the rocks of the coast which means you can simply jump off the rocks into the sea.  Video coming soon.  Later in the day, we decided that it would be a good idea to get a boat…a Zodiac and zip at lightning speed around the many islands.  Don’t you need a licence for that sort of escapade?  Perhaps.  However, Lucy and I decided the key was to be bold and appear competent.  Accordingly, we went into the nearest tackiest souvenir shop we could find and bought ourselves sailor caps.  I think the man who owned the boat thought we were bonkers.  He is partly right.

We had a great time zipping along the coast of Dubrovnik and visiting the small and larger islands.  We anchored in a bay on one island and visited the beach cafe for coffee.  Anchored is not perhaps the best term.  All the boats that were anchored, as you would expect, stayed in the spot in which they were anchored.  Ours drifted off.  It was a comedy to watch and Lucy and I skippering the boat obviously provided the onlookers with lots of afternoon entertainment.  When we got back we spoke to some people from Oz whose friends managed to capsize a jet ski they hired and were now stranded on a nudist beach on one of the remoter islands. Everything is relative and so, by comparison, we did well managing our boat.

Today, we found an excellent launderette just outside the Old Town.  What a hip place to hang out one’s dirty laundry.  The place is covered in post-it notes.  Everyone who visits, while waiting for their whites to wash, can leave notes on the walls.  I left a couple while waiting for my togs to dry.

We then did the complete walk around the city walls.  It was hot but a ‘must-do’.  Our muscles ached from the hours yesterday afternoon banging around in the Zodiac boat; every one of my vertebrae is in agony and walking up and down the steps around the Old Town walls was a challenge.  I love roofs, walls, doors and windows and I couldn’t resist constantly clicking my camera to capture the continuous varying sea of roofs.  Enjoy the pictures (click on picture to view the gallery; click ‘X’ in the top LEFT corner to close the gallery).

As if we didn’t have enough of the sea, we caught a ferry boat across the bay to Cavtat in the afternoon even though I knew thunderstorms were on the way.  The lure of fresh fish restaurants was too much to resist and we feasted on a grilled dorada which was heaven while thunder and lightning erupted around us. Below are some snaps taken in Cavtat.

We left just as the sun was setting on a much rougher sea to get back to Dubrovnik port at about 8pm local time. I just had to photograph the setting sun while we waited for our ferry….

We’re up very early tomorrow to fly to Vienna.  More storms are on the way.  I am hoping to get off early, fly to Zagreb and refuel before the storms start.  From Zagreb to Vienna I think the weather forecast is good.
